Android Nougat Continues Impressive Growth in Android’s May Distribution Numbers

Google’s latest distribution numbers for a 7-day period ending May 2, 2017 shows that Android Nougat has continued its impressive gains. Compared to a month ago, Nougat showed an increase of 2.2 percent — a sizeable improvement considering just how vast the Android ecosystem is.

With a 2.2 percent increase, Android Nougat is now running on 7.1 percent of Android devices out there — up from 4.9 percent a month ago. The increase can be attributed to the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ along with many older flagship Samsung and mid-range devices getting the Nougat update.

Android Distribution Numbers

Android Lollipop continued to be the most popular version of Android as it was found running on 32 percent of devices out there. Android 6.0 Marshmallow came in a close second at 31.2 percent. Surprisingly, these numbers remain the same as last month. Older versions of Android like KitKat and Jelly Bean saw a decline in their share from 20 percent to 18.8 percent and 10.1 percent to 9.1 percent, respectively.

With the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ going on sale in most countries by the end of late April, it is likely that Nougat will continue its impressive growth in the coming months based on the strong consumer interest surrounding the device.
