Sony releases Android M Developer Preview for selected Xperia devices

Android M

Sony is known to be one of the leading OEMs to support the third-party Android development community for its devices. This is evident from the AOSP for Xperia program from the company, where it offers a stock AOSP build of the latest version of Android for its selected devices.

As a part of its Open Device program, Sony has now provided developers and advanced users with all the necessary software binaries and instructions to get the Developer Preview of Android M up and running for certain Xperia devices. Sony has also uploaded a video of the Developer Preview of Android M running on the Xperia Z3 Compact:

The supported list of devices are as follows:

  • Xperia Z3
  • Xperia Z3 Compact
  • Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact
  • Xperia Z2
  • Xperia Z2 Tablet
  • Xperia Z1 Compact
  • Xperia Z1
  • Xperia Z Ultra
  • Xperia E3
  • Xperia M2
  • Xperia T2 Ultra
  • Xperia T3

The company has not made pre-built ROMs available for the devices above, but it is just a matter of time before a developer creates an Android M based ROM for all the devices supported under the Open Device program from Sony. The ROM is only meant for developers for their testing purposes, and cannot be used as a daily driver since the camera and modem functionality are broken.

In case you are interested in building the ROM yourself, all the instructions can be found here while the necessary binaries can be downloaded from here.
