It looks like Google is all set to bring the ability to mirror content from Android devices to its $35 HDMI streamer – Chromecast – very soon. As discovered by Koushik Dutta, the patches in Android 4.4.1 indicate that Google is working on bringing this feature to Chromecast very soon.
Apart from the patches, the Android 4.4.1 update also renamed the Miracast settings option to only ‘Cast screen’, further confirming the fact that this feature is going to land sooner than later.
Google’s philosophy with the Chromecast has been to curate a marketplace with quality apps, rather than quantity. The company has not yet released the final SDK for the device, which has prevented many third party developers from releasing apps that can take advantage of the true potential of the device.
However, Google will be holding a Chromecast hackathon on the 6th and 7th of December, after which it would be releasing the final SDK for the device. Hopefully, the company will also release some apps from third-party developers like Plex, since the Chromecast team has been secretly working with them since quite a few months.
