Samsung today officially announced its latest mobile chipset, the Exynos 9 Series 8895. Based on the company’s 10nm FinFET node, the chipset also comes with an embedded gigabit LTE modem that is capable of 1Gbps downlink speeds and 150Mbps uplink.
Samsung says the move to 10nm node has allowed for a 27 percent increase in performance or 40 percent lower power consumption when compared to its predecessor that was fabricated on the 14nm node.
Like the Exynos 8890 chipset before it, the Exynos 8895 is an octa-core chip that features four of Samsung’s second generation custom CPU cores which are paired with 4x Cortex-A53 cores. Samsung uses its own Samsung Coherent Interconnect (SCI) technology for “faster computing” across a wide range of applications.
“In addition to being built on the most advanced 10nm FinFET process technology, the new Exynos 9 Series 8895 incorporates Samsung’s cutting-edge technologies including a 2nd generation custom CPU, gigabit LTE modem, and more” said Ben Hur, Vice President of System LSI marketing at Samsung Electronics. “With industry leading technologies like VPU, the Exynos 8895 will drive the innovation of next generation smartphones, VR headsets, and automotive infotainment system.”
On the GPU front, the chipset features Mali-G71 GPU that is optimised for 4K UHD VR. Other features of the chipset include video recording and playback at 4K resolution at 120fps, enhanced video processing technology for VR apps and an embedded Vision Processing Unit (VPU) for improved video tracking, panoramic image processing, and machine vision technology. For improved security, the Exynos 8895 comes with a separate processing unit that handles all data and functions related to iris and fingerprint scanners and mobile payments.
Samsung’s Series 9 Exynos 8895 chipset are already under mass production. The Korean company is expected to make use of the chipset in some of the variants of the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+.
Last year, Samsung’s Exynos 8890 chipset was significantly better than Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820 chip in terms of CPU performance and overall efficiency. It will be interesting to see if that same trend continues this year with the Exynos 8895 and Snapdragon 835 chipset or not.
