Root access gained on the Moto G

Moto G

Got yourself a Moto G and cannot wait to root it? As with any new Android device that is released, it is only a matter of a few days before someone gains root access on it.

Now, MoDaCo founder, Paul O’Brien, has managed to gain root access on the handset. The steps itself are extremely simple, but require an unlocked bootloader, which will wipe the handset clean of any data. So, don’t forget to create backups before starting with the rooting procedure.

At the moment, it is not yet known if the carrier variants of the Moto G will ship with a locked down bootloader or not. If they do, the above root method will not work on them.

You can head over to MoDaCo forums for the download link and rooting instructions.

If you end up rooting your G, do drop in a comment and let us know why you decided to root your brand new smartphone.

Backups of *some* app data may be an issue (as without root the only solution I know of is Helium Backup and some people say this app doesn’t work with the Moto G) so unlock your bootloaders as soon as you get the phone kids!

Google really needs to give us Android users a backup solution. It beggars belief that we don’t have one already.
